Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1)

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow along the nervous system and creates characteristic skin changes. It affects approximately 1 in 2,600 to 3,000 people globally. While it is a lifelong condition with no cure, symptoms can be effectively managed with regular monitoring.

Treatment for NF1 is limited, and there is currently no cure. Pain meds can be prescribed to help with pain. In some cases, growths may be removed surgically or reduced with radiation therapy. Treatment options are limited, given the tumours tendency to regrow following surgery and their propensity to transform into malignant tumours following radiation.Additionally, surgery in these areas can cause further injury to nerves and additional neurological problems. The benefits of surgery should always be considered against its risks. Some NF tumours are inoperable.
